Way back in the past, a medieval farmer’s son is given a strange book of prophecies that inspires him to become a monk.
A powerful local family hear of the book and arrange to have it stolen. In the present day, Elizabeth, a suburban schoolgirl, starts taking mysterious ferry trips across a river by moonlight – and disappears.
Eschewing narrative trickery and high falutin’ language, Adam Howorth has nevertheless concocted something rich and strange out of these elements.
It’s quietly thrillerish, unfussily time-slippy and weaves a mysterious spell on the reader as we follow Elizabeth’s moonstruck adventures and her parents’ agonies as they work out what has happened.
